It took a bit of ingenuity to marry the computer to a mobile phone, but after the iPhone was launched three years ago, it was inevitable that Apple would conceptualize a phone-and-computer combo and the path inexorably led to the iPad.

The computer in the form of a slim slab that could hide in a jacket pocket moved from Tom Cruise and Peirce Brosnan movies into our lives in 2010 with the launch of the Apple device. Success begets success, so they say, and post the iPad, tablets went right up to the top of the agenda of tech companies. From major brands like Dell, Samsung and HP to smaller ones like Binatone and Viewsonic, the tablet became the prescribed device for commercial weight gain. India still waits for the iPad to vend officially, but the people have numerous options available.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been wildly successful across the world and made up for the half-year lag between the iPad’s and its debut by quickly going up the sales chart. And there are others. Tablets attract by their abilities and the convenience they promise. They relieve rat-race stress by easing things out. They mimic the netbooks, but come with qualities that outshine those of the older technology.

WHAT ARE TABLETS?

It’s not as if tablets are a new phenomenon. The earlier tablets were PCs with 180 degree rotating touch screens. The latest avatars threw the physical keyboards into the recycle bin, hid the rest of the machinery behind the screen and took on coquettish forms. Tiny chipsets, like Nvidia’s Tegra, and developments in the mobile operating system sector helped the tablet come alive.

The iOS was tweaked for the iPad, others harness Google’s Android mobile platform. Some will now be based on Microsoft’s Windows 7, while BlackBerry will come out with one running on a special BlackBerry OS. Using the mobile brains also means tablets can boost their utility with thousands of apps available on Apple iTunes store or Android Market and the like.

WHY A TABLET?

Well it’s simple, because the tablet is the future. It has the looks, brains and features to make it worth every step you take with it in tandem. A tablet can compute, can be used to browse the Web, can double up as your PMR constitute your 3G connectivity and do much more. Yes, much more.
