In light of the recent growing wave of problems related to personal data being leaked, Google have unveiled an interesting new tool called “Me on the Web,” aimed at those of you who’re more concerned with their personal details and want to know as soon as some of them have been spotted online.

Using the tool, you can create customized e-mail alerts which you’ll receive as soon as Google’s spider bots have uncovered something relevant. You can also receive them in a scheduled, weekly or monthly manner. The default alerts look out for your real name and e-mail address – but you can customize them to a great extent, adding things like your phone number, SSN, personal address or whatever else you can think of.

In addition, you’re also given the ability to remove your personal information from Google’s search results, something new and unique in their services. Basically, according to Google, this service is designed to give you control over what others can find out about you online. Google’s philosophy is that your online identity isn’t just shaped by your own activities, but by those of others as well (when they address you) – and in some cases the results of one single post can be disastrous (like that drunken picture of you from last week’s party suddenly escaping from the private circles of your Facebook friends and making its way onto a public blog with your name under it).

There’s been a rumor going around lately (starting from an anonymous tip, apparently), according to which HP’s upcoming TouchPad slate won’t come out with the functionality to edit Office documents right away. Sure, it’s just a rumor at this point – and some have even speculated that it may have been started by BlackBerry in retaliation to recent events – there’s still some undeniable truth to it.

Though HP has previously strongly noted the TouchPad’s inclusion of the QuickOffice app, it’s only said that it’s “working with QuickOffice” to include document editing functionality, and it’s never presented a live demonstration of editing in action. The company has been trying to boost its app count recently, though perhaps it should have tried better to secure the primary functionality instead.

There’s still some hope in the whole situation though – the same tip also suggests that there will be at least some editing capabilities present in the device through an update in Q3 2011 – it’s not that far away anyway, so things may not be as bad as they seem after all.

There have been quite a lot of leaks turning up lately, and the most recent one is from Sony Ericsson and concerns their Xperia Duo – which looks like it’s going to be the first dual-core phone from the company, by the way. It looks really good in terms of design from what we can tell from the images, and it’s certainly managed to stir up some interest already.

Some conclusions can be drawn based on the image – the screen of the phone is probably larger than the Xperia Arc’s 4.2″ screen, and the display actually stretches almost from edge to edge across the entire phone. There are several buttons for specialized Android navigation, featured in a single thin line (like in the other Xperia models). Additionally, we’ve spotted some modifications to the weather widget – and there seems to be a shorcut to the media controls under the main dock icons.

Sony Ericsson also seem to be keeping with the more recent tradition of stylizing the names of their Xperia phones in small letters, like they did with the Neo and Arc. We’re expecting to see this phone with a 8 megapixel Exmor R camera sensor (the same one like in the Xperia Arc), or perhaps even a 16 MP one.

Not many details are available at the moment – though we do hope that the manufacturer will deliver a solid Android-powered handset, and will manage to address all the problems previously troubling the company’s smartphones.

The Nintendo Wii and Wii U are facing some tough competition as gamers move to playing games on Facebook, smartphones and iPads. Many that purchased a Wii when it first came out, bought because it was something new and brought the family together. The new Nintendo Wii console doesn’t do much else than that, there isn’t enough “new” in the console to prompt gamers to purchase it. The Nintendo Wii U might be a little too late for some, as it doesn’t really add more value than playing games on the iPhone, iPad or Facebook.

Nintendo caters to a young crowd, the same crowd that Facebook games or younger smartphone users, making it more important to wow the crowd to gain the popularity back from other companies. Games like “Angry Birds” and “Farmville” are taking over with all age groups. Nintendo is going to release the Wii U soon, but a price has not been announced yet.

The Wii U is basically a controller for the Nintendo Wii console, that allows a user to connect to the Wii on a 6.2-inch touch screen flat tablet looking unit. Users can also transfer content back and forth from Wii to the controller via a wireless connection.

If Nintendo wants to compete with other handheld, smartphone, or browser based games it is really going to have get back on track, target their user base and bring something new and interesting to the tablet. With market share that has already fallen 13 percent since E3, Nintendo doesn’t have much more to lose.

Your iPhone just might have all of your day-to-day activities planned, emails stored and pictures saved, but what happens when you lose your precious iPhone? You go crazy and start asking friends and family if they have seen it, right? Well, Apple has a feature on your iPhone that will help you track it down should it get lost or stolen and a new feature added recently has Apple looking to patent the feature. The new feature will allow a user to remotely access the iPhone to turn on the camera and microphone in order to hear where the phone might be.

Another feature that would be perfect should the iPhone be stolen, instead of lost, is the addition of lockable files and apps. That way a user can scramble their files, or lock out the apps, and a thief will not have access to them. If, and when, the user gets their iPhone back, the files can be unscrambled and the apps unlocked. The original “Find my iPhone” feature was a paid service, but is now offered up free if you have any Apple iPhone 4, iPad or fourth generation iPod Touch.

The new feature will also include a message to the person who found, or stole it, that reads the iPhone is being pinged for location. The person can then enter the right password to stop the request, or contact the owner to return the phone. Apple products are a hot commodity so any type of service like this that allows a user to recover what was lost or stolen is very valuable. This patent could also help Apple compete with Android devices over the long term.

You know how to use a regular search engine and they are very similar to those found on the mobile web, but what about searching for apps on your mobile phone? Hundreds of thousands of apps are popping up each week and being able to find some that cater to your needs can be very, very important. Yahoo is the latest to take on the task of app discovery for the iPhone, Android and even for the desktop.

The Yahoo iPhone app search is called “Yahoo! AppSpot” and basically searches your apps and displays ones that you do not already have on your phone. It will also show apps that are related to those you already have on your phone. You are going to get recommendations sent to you and the main categories are music, games, news, social-networking, utilities and travel. You can also search via keyword and the results are displayed in a nice and easy to use interface that shows the app title, description and popularity.

The app search still needs some work, but for not the search results work and will get you pointed in the right direction at least. The categories that are used the most, like music, return results that are typical, like Pandora or Last.fm, but when you search the photos category the results show apps that are not as well known, but that doesn’t mean they are good. With that said, I am not sure what the algorithm is that they use, but I am sure it’s a “work in progress” anyways. We’ll see how Yahoo holds up against other companies doing the same with mobile app search.

Bitcoin is an international currency that is anonymous, decentralized and only been around for about two years. The Bitcoin is exchanged peer-to-peer or “mined” by user who get CPU cycles to mathematically generate new Bitcoin. Gawker.com did a story on the Bitcoin last July about the online drug market mainly using Bitcoin as the currency of choice. Bitcoin might have just finally made it’s way into the spotlight, although it was not a very good entrance. Bitcoin has been attacked by a malware virus found “in the wild” and the virus seeks out “wallets” and steals from users, much like a Trojan virus seeks out usernames and passwords for banking websites.

The malware, called Infostealer.Coinbit, is nothing very complex at all. Basically, it seeks out Windows computers and just searches for the Bitcoin file stored there, emails the file information to the hacker and they can then do as they please with that Bitcoin account. Symantec was the first to report the malware and a spokesman for the company says users should always “choose a strong password for this” just in case hackers are trying to get your “wallet” open.

Because the Bitcoins do have an actual value in todays currency, it makes it a prime target for hackers. The first report of this attack was this week when a user on Bitcoin reported that a hacker had removed about 25,000 BTC from his computer, the equivalent to about $500,000. Most of the hacks on Bitcoin were to run “mining scams” to get more currency, but these reports show hackers are just going straight for the money.

It seems that id Software have just finished their first round of discussions about the design of the next installment in the Quake series. And those of you who’ve been with the series from the beginning know how many different faces it’s had – first we had the fantasy/horror/medieval mash-up in the original Quake 1, then the series got a reboot with a new setting and an actual storyline in Quake 2, moving to a completely multiplayer experience with almost no storyline (and generally no connection to the previous titles) in Quake 3, and for Quake 4, returning to the story around the Strogg alien colony invasion on Earth that started in Quake 2.

However, id have stated that they’re getting bored of the Strogg setting, and they feel gamers are too. And in a surprising twist, they stated that they’d like to go back to Quake 1 and borrow as much as possible from it for the next game in the series, Quake 5. Of course, you should keep in mind that the whole setting in Quake 1 was made mostly spontaneously and without much planning (influenced by Lovecraft’s horror novels), so we can’t say how much of that we’ll see in the next game.

But just by itself, this does sound fantastic. Personally, I really preferred the gritty, mystical setting that surrounded the first game and wasn’t so much into the generic space environments Quake 2 and 4 took us through. I’d really love to see id explore new concepts for this game and make it big like it deserves.

No word was given on the potential multiplayer, on the other hand – are id going to leave that aside for now and concentrate on a successful single player campaign?

Best Buy and Staples have started selling some laptop models from HP’s lineup with great characteristics at some really attractive prices. First we’ve got the 15.6″ HP 2000-219DX with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium, 3 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive running at 5400 rpm. You also get a webcam and Wi-Fi support, and of course an optical drive.

Furthermore, you’ll be powered by the 1.6 GHz E-350 CPU from AMD, which combines AMD’s Radeon 6310 graphics chip with the primary dual-core processor which runs the laptop, which in the end results in outstanding performance given the price of the model. AMD are claiming their fame with their graphics chip, which offers better performance than the chip found in Intel’s processor deals.

Then we have Staples, selling a model with similar specs though from Acer (the precise model is LX.RD502.032), again for $349, and with a dual-core AMD C-50 processor combined with Radeon HD 6250 graphics.

Why the sudden good deal though? It can be traced back to the new AMD A series processors, and these laptops are expected to start selling in a few weeks from PC developers like HP and Toshiba. You can also get some smaller models for $329 at Costco and some other similar stores. For example, consider the 11.6″ Acer laptop that comes with an AMD C-50 processor and costs $329.

Since the last update came out for Verizon’s HTC Thunderbolt, there have been a lot of complaints from users concerning random boots and other problems, and it appears these issues are about to be addressed soon – the carrier has apparently been working on a solution for a while already, though until today we couldn’t tell you when it’s slated to come out on the market. All we know is that it was supposed to make an appearance around the middle of this month, but apparently this has been pushed back a little.

The latest news on the device have it that according to a tip from Verizon, the OTA fix will be made available on June 30th. A few screenshots made their way on the Internet and they confirm that as well, additionally making us think that the release may not be just a maintenance update for the devices it affects, but it will add some new functionality as well.

The update is expected to introduce Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, as well as a pre-installed Amazon Appstore, Skype with video calling enabled, as wella s GTalk, again with video chat support. All of this sounds great, but we’ll have to wait a few weeks to see what’s actually in store for us. Meanwhile, Thunderbolt owners – what are you most excited about in this update? Have the problems been affecting you?
